Professional Processes: Interactive Connections

Nadieh Bremer is a prominent data visualization freelancer with a background in astronomy and data science. She often works with large datasets to create interactive projects. This talk is from last year’s Eyeo Festival, and she goes through the process of designing several projects related to connections. Please watch at least from 8:20 to 17:40, though the whole video has great examples.

Readings
The death of interactive infographics? (Dominikus Baur)
In Defense of Interactive Graphics (Gregor Aisch)

Discussion

Let’s discuss those two readings about whether interactive graphics are worth it, considering they take more effort to make and more effort for users.

Interactivity Debate: Answer these questions in relation to the two readings about interactive graphics.

  • What’s one point about interactive graphics, pro or con, that stood out to you from either of the readings?
  • When or why do you think it’s worth it to make interactive graphics even if very few people use all the interactive features?

Assignment: Advice Flowchart (10 points)

In this assignment, you’ll create a flowchart that offers advice for different scenarios. This is a more open-ended and creative project to take a break from the step-by-step tutorials, as well as review tree diagrams.
