Presentation: Exploring “Xenographics”

We previously looked at taxonomies for classifying common chart types. Maarten Lambrechts, a Belgian data visualization consultant, runs a site called Xenographics to collect examples of strange chart forms. In this presentation, he talks about that project with a bunch of examples. He also highlights creative ways news organizations have adapted to small mobile screens.

At minimum, watch from 6:00 to 23:30. (The introduction explains about William Playfair, so watch that if you don’t remember what he’s known for!)

Discussion

There’s a lot going on in Xenographics presentation, so let’s share notes to help remember key ideas.

Xenographics: Write about the following with regard to the “Xenographics” video presentation:

  • What is one notable quote or key idea?
  • What is one specific example that you found interesting, and why?
  • Were there any ideas you disagreed with or examples you found too weird?

Assignment: Just one this week

There is one larger assignment this week, about creating social media visualizations from a report about youth sports participation.
