Design Statement

The Data: For my personal project, I decided to split my data in three parts. They are total body percentage per month, total average number of sleep hours per day for each month, and total weight per month. The total body percentage per month was done by University of Recreation and Chinook. They got a tool where they check how much fat I have and turn it into a certain percentage. I decided to record it from August to November. For example, I wanted to track the month of September for total body weight percentage. All I had to do was take the number and calculate it into a specific percentage. I also had help from the personal trainers at UREC and Chinook. For the total number of hours slept per day for each month, I tracked how many hours of sleep I got for each day for each month. I recorded it from September to November. Next, I took the total for each month for that specific month and divide it by how many times for each day to get the average. For example, in September, I tracked just Mondays. I added the total number of hours for just Mondays and divide it by how Mondays I did for that month. The total weight for each month was recorded by using a scale. I recorded from August to November.

The Visualizations: For my data, I decided to use Tableau because it was the easiest to understand and I had a lot of familiarity. By using tableau, I was able to learn new things such as features and adding text which made my visual project a lot stronger. For chart type, I decided to use bar graphs for all because it was first recommended by tableau and I thought it made sense a lot using that specific type of data. The color I chose for this project was blue because it was a color that was not too light or too dark. It was the perfect color. The data that was interesting to me was the total weight for each month. When I first arrived in Pullman, I weighed around 215 pounds because I travelled to South Korea for a month and ate a lot of food. In August, I started to hit the weight room where I saw my weight drop a lot from August to September by at least 35 pounds. I normally exercise in the mornings because I am morning person. Also, I drank a gallon of water every other day to stay hydrated and motivated to exercise every day. Overall, I feel really good about where I am right now and can’t wait to see what happens down the road.

Insights: One thing I learned was to be patient. There were times where I will be lazy to learn because of the amount of school work provided during midterms and before school break this semester. Also, I learned that if I exercised one to two hours a day and each day, the results will show. What could be further developed will be staying consistent each day rather being lazy. I learned about keeping myself in shape and tracking what I eat and do each day. One thing I learned from the data is if I continued to track the results equally for each month moving forward, I will get a better representation of where I am in terms of sleep, total body weight, and total body fat percentage. If I did the project a little longer, the results will get better. For example, to get the average for number of hours slept for September was different than October. In October, I divided by 5 for Mondays compared to September when I divide by 2 for Mondays. The results show it is not accurate. I was not surprised because the results were basically similar to each other. I left the project knowing what could happen if I tracked the same amount of days for each month. One thing I would change will be tracking the same amount of days per month to get an accurate result.
