Week 14
This week is about how children are represented in photojournalism, with related stories and ethics considerations.
In this final project, you will demonstrate your understanding of photojournalism skills and standards by nominating and evaluating excellent photos for Washington Photos of the Year. Each team will be responsible for one award category, and each student will individually make a selection.
This assignment is about how your camera is a tool you can use, hack and control. In the past, this type of experimentation was costly because wasting film was expensive. Not so with digital!
Week 13
Photojournalism is typically about what happens in public, but much of life happens out of the public eye. This week is about what makes personal spaces and issues newsworthy for visual documentation.
Week 12
This week is about contemplating the ethics and justifications for images of death in photojournalism.
Week 11
This week is about wildlife and the environment, and photographing the natural world in ways that most people never get to see with their own eyes.
This assignment is about creating a cohesive photo essay framed around one day. There are two options for completing this assignment — one option with Election Day and the other option is a day and theme that you define.
Week 10
This week is about portraits in photojournalism.
This assignment is about creating and analyzing portraits used in mass media. You will make three photo portraits and, separately, compare portraits of a celebrity or public figure to assess how those photos represent one person in different ways.
