When evaluating an interactive, think about these characteristics: What is the level of interactivity? What is the far view? What is the near view? <\/p>\n<p>This video discussion identifies these characteristics in several interactives, some of which still work well and others that do not because the underlying technology or website has changed. Do you think these principles are still true today, or have they shifted?<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subhead\">Discussion<\/span><\/p>\n<p>An interactive graphic known as the &#8220;dialect map&#8221; is one of the most-read and most-shared stories ever published by The New York Times. But it&#8217;s designed for the U.S. and doesn&#8217;t work for everyone, so let&#8217;s see what happens. Go through the entire quiz: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2013\/12\/20\/sunday-review\/dialect-quiz-map.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How Y\u2019all, Youse and You Guys Talk<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dialect Map:<\/strong> Go through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2013\/12\/20\/sunday-review\/dialect-quiz-map.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">whole quiz<\/a> and then answer the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What were your top three cities, and does that seem accurate for you?<\/li>\n<li>Do you think you would have gone through the entire quiz if it wasn&#8217;t a class requirement?<\/li>\n<li>Knowing that this has been a very popular and successful graphic, do you think that reputation is justified? Is the payoff worth the effort?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"subhead\">Assignment: Interactive Map Comparison (20 points)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This assignment involves a comparison of different tools for creating an interactive choropleth map.
