Hope for the Homeless

Photos and Writing by Alyssa Costello
The overwhelming number of animals in shelters across the United States is an undeniable problem. In the beginning of November, Kitsap Humane Society celebrated the grand opening of their brand new Pet Adoption Center. The addition of the new building provides a more quiet, spacious area to fit the needs of all animals individually. Within the facility, there is better ventilation, more spacious rooms and glass, soundproofed kennels to lower animal stress and improve animal viewing for potential adopters. From various different housing options to specific areas for adopters to meet shelter animals one on one, the new facility is working to advance what was once an overcrowded, stress-filled environment. While the new adoption center does not entirely solve the exponentially growing shelter animal problem in our nation, it does help to improve the quality of life for the shelter animals each and every single day. For my photo essay, I wanted to capture not only the animals but the new space that they get to call their home for now.
