Overcoming Dyslexia

Photos and Writing by Grace Henry

For my photo essay, I decided to portray a college student living with Dyslexia. Dyslexia is a general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols, but that do not affect general intelligence. I used my friend Madi as an example of someone who is Dyslexic. Although Dyslexia is something that you can live a normal life with, that does not mean it doesn't make daily life more challenging. While being a student, Dyslexia can be especially difficult to live with because of the amount of reading and writing required to do. In this photo essay, I took pictures showing Madi doing homework, reading, and other school related activities that can be difficult if you have Dyslexia. These photos show her overcoming the challenges she faces and shows that having a learning disability like Dyslexia does not prevent you from doing well in school.

This is Madi Praino and she was diagnosed with Dyslexia in elementary school.

This is an example of what her writing can look like when you are dyslexic.

Sometimes Madi needs help with longer readings.

Although having dyslexia can be tough, Madi has no problem doing her homework.

It helps Madi to move to quieter areas when studying gets difficult so she can focus better on reading.

Reading is usually not too difficult for Madi.

This is a font that is usually easier for people with Dyslexia read.

Reading and writing in a well lit room is important when you have dyslexia.

Writing with dyslexia is not as hard as you would think.

Madi does not let her dyslexia slow her down.
