On-Air Personalities

Photos and Writing by Christian Duplessie

For this Project, I wanted to capture the people behind the voice heard on the radio. Each on-air personalty has their own individual quirks, styles and passions that make them good at what they do. Whether it is a homegrown musician who is really in to the music he showcases, or a Canadian immigrant who loves to have fun and share her joy with listeners across the country-side, each voice is unique and more than just a DJ.

I hope you enjoy a rare peak behind the radio tuner and obtain a better understanding of the people who bring your favorite music to you over the airwaves.

Kyle De Hart riffs on one of his many guitars in between segments of his show The Afternoon Saloon on KZZL Bull Country 99.5. De-Heart is part of 6 different bands with genres varying from folk to heavy death metal music.

De Hart pauses and composes himself before going on-air for the next segment of his show.

De Hart takes a phone request while preparing for the next segment of his show.

Mandy Grant dances, jokes and laughs as she performs a segment of her show The Afternoon Drive with Mandy Grant on KZFN Z-Fun 106.

Grant takes down the information of and banters with a winner for one her shows contests in between segments of her show.

Grant flails her arms as she laments to her listeners about how long she has mispronounced the name Macklemore during a segment of her show.

LEFT: Grant hums along to Havana by Camila Cabillo in between segments of her show; RIGHT De Hart adjusts volume levels during one of his show segments. All on-air personalities must be able to multitask and correctly navigate and maintain board audio levels throughout their broadcast

LEFT: Commercial Producer Kimberly Dawn rocks her own style as she produces spots to air during radio shows across nine different stations; RIGHT Dawn multi-tasks monitoring levels, reading copy, and adding meta-data during spot production. Even the voices of commercials face a difficult job. While they may not be live on-air, there are so many facets to production, most producers take over an hour to produce a 30 second ad.
