Behind the Scenes of the Outdoor Recreation Center at Washington State University

Photos and Writing by Lillian Miller

I follow the Outdoor Recreation Center as they plan a kayak camping trip. Through this trip we see what they do to prepare for their events. The ORC plans events for WSU Students in which students can go on kayaking, hiking, skiing, and many more different types of trips. These trips are really fun for students, but many don't realize all the pre-trip planning that occurs plus all the work that is put into planning the actual events. My idea rooted from my love for the outdoors and my kayaking trip with the ORC. My process began with taking photos in the ORC of the daily tasks they do to plan for the specific kayak camping trip, then taking photos on the trip.

All plans and emails go through email and the ORC website.

ORC members carry kayaks outside to be cleaned and repaired.

After being washed and repaired, kayaks are dried and returned to the rack.

Drying sleeping bags for the Kayaking trip.

ORC Members test the stoves for proper functionality.

Tying down the kayaks for the drive to the Snake River.

Checking out tents from the ORC.

ORC Instructor, Alida, modeling the kayaking outfit.

Teaching how to properly use an oar.

ORC Instructor, Jack, teaching how to enter and exit a kayak.

Loading the kayaks with all the gear.

Learning how to light the stove to make the Couscous.

Setting up tarp tent for outdoor sleeping.
