Labor of Love

Photos and Writing by Lexi Krzycki

For my “Labor of Love” final assignment, I profiled an artist named Jasmine Acosta. Jasmine paints and draws pictures of abstract images. It relates to the theme “Labor of Love” because she does not sell her work, it is only for her. She brings the art community beautiful paintings and is passionate about her work. I interviewed and photographed Jasmine a week after her art show. She showed me where she paints and where her art was displayed for the show.

I want the viewers to learn how hard artists work to perfect their paintings. Jasmine expressed how hard she worked on each piece and the hours it took preparing them. The whole process was very visually appealing and interesting to learn about.

Exploring the world made Jasmine bring the outside in with her art.

Jasmine said her inspiration for her paintings started last March while on a road trip with her two best friends.

She envisioned the nature beauty of the Oregon and California coast for her pieces.

Jasmine spends several hours working on her paintings. She stays at the studio so late at night that she befriended the janitor, who often brings her cookies while she paints.

She likes to drink wine while she paints at night.

Listening to music helps Jasmine concentrate while creating her vibrant colored paintings.

"I want my artwork to remind my viewers about the true beauty of this world and soak up the magic through each brushstroke as I do."

After graduation, Jasmine is moving down to San Diego with her best friend. She believes seeing the world will fuel her future paintings.

She uses different kinds of paints depending on the canvas. "Oil paint is the hardest to use because if you mess up, you have to wait awhile until it drys to fix it."

Jasmine has a little cubicle in the studio located in the art building's basement. She spends hours sketching, painting and creating new ideas.

"Art should be a journey, an interest, something that looks inside a person and touches the human experience" -Jasmine Acosta, "PNW Journey."
