Keys To Her Heart

Photos and Writing by Lauren Palmer

Music is an outlet for many people. It is a way for people to connect and show their emotions through something besides words. Elisabeth Torres, one of my sorority sisters, has been playing piano since she was a child. She loved the sound and intensity of the piano. Through this photo essay, the viewer should feel the passion of Elisabeth as she plays, even though they cannot hear the sound. The viewer should also see the beauty of the piano and the artistic quality that it has. The close up and zoomed out photos show the direct and overall beauty of the instrument and show why Elisabeth has such a love for it.

"As I got older, I was able to connect it more to my life. I loved that it was almost like a heart beat that was able to be collaborated together and make a sound that felt just as close enough to a feeling," Torres said.

The piano has strings inside. They are hammered on to make the sound.

A close up of Elisabeth shows her concentration as she plays.

Elisabeth's feet play just an important role as her hands. Each pedal creates different sounds that contribute to the music she is creating

Steinway and Sons made this specific piano. They were founded in 1853 and make pianos all over the world.

"You could play a classic song or a song on the other end of the spectrum of music with some R&B or rock and roll," Torres said.

"If I couldn't say it, I could always play it," Torres said.

This piano is in Elisabeth's dorm, Wilmer-Davis.

There is a purpose to every piece of an instrument. From top to bottom, each one creates a new sound or feeling. The pedals can create long drawn out notes which give the music more emotion.

Elisabeth has an escape through the music she plays. Even though she does not always have time to sit and play, whenever she returns to the piano, she remembers the freedom that it makes her feel.
