School of Music - Outside Looking In

Photos and Writing by Carmen Jaramillo

In trying to find a focus for this project I thought really hard about what “Labor of Love” really meant. To me it means the act of doing something, that may be extremely time consuming or difficult, not necessarily because you will receive some benefit but because you truly enjoy the process. The most obvious example of that to me was art.

I chose to do this project on students in the School of Music specifically because they have all devoted themselves to something that may or may not be profitable for them, but must give them some sort of deeper sense of worth. Often recitals and performances of student in the School of Music have low attendance, and yet each student preforms like they are in Carnegie Hall. It’s strange to think that most people don’t choose careers based off of what they love to do but instead what will maximize their investment.

To shoot for this project I went to several School of Music concerts and attended some ensemble classes.
